General information on rape
Rape is a complex crime affecting a number of aspects of the individual’s personal freedom, honour, morals and character. The victim is forced into sexual intercourse, either by violent means or by making her fear for her life or health.
Committing a rape is a serious violation of the victim’s personal integrity, i.e. the freedom and opportunity to reject approaches of a sexual nature and to make their own decisions on their sexuality.
But not only is rape a violation of the individual victim. It also generates fear in others such that their freedom may be affected. Therefore, committing a rape is a violation of peace and harmony which affects many more people than just the rape victim herself.
The scope of the crime is reflected in the damage it causes. Victims may suffer a long series of problems, both physically and mentally. The mental consequences of a rape are often extensive and long term, and can manifest themselves in physical problems.
- Rapes are always perceived as a danger by the victim
- Rape situations are completely sudden and unexpected
- Common ways of dealing with the situation don’t work
- A rape is always a turning point in people’s lives
